Teenager Tyrique George scored and set up another to inspire Chelsea as they avoided a Carabao Cup upset at League One Lincoln City. 24 Sep 2025
The third-tier outfit led at the break after Rob Street took advantage of a stray Enzo Fernandez pass, but George scored three minutes after the restart before assisting Facundo Buonanotte for the 50th-minute winner. Lincoln boss Michael Skubala rested several starters as he kept faith in those who impressed in earlier rounds, and the Imps terrorised the world champions with their tireless pressing and aerial threat from long throw-ins. Lewis Montsma almost gave them the perfect start, but his low early effort after Chelsea failed to clear a long throw cannoned off the foot of the post with visiting keeper Filip Jorgensen well beaten. The Premier League side's shaky start was summed up by Jorgensen clattering into Wesley Fofana - one of his side's few fit centre-backs - inside the opening minutes. Lincoln, third in League One, continued to cause chaos in the Chelsea box, as Jorgensen - deputising for the suspended Robert Sanchez - struggled to deal with aerial balls. The 23-year-old almost gifted Chelsea fan Freddie Draper the opener when his failed punch landed at the striker's feet, but Lincoln team-mate Sonny Bradley inadvertently blocked the goalbound effort. It was fitting the 42nd-minute opener was of Chelsea's own doing, with captain Fernandez playing a sloppy looping ball across the back, which was cut out by Ivan Varfolomeev and slotted home by Street. Lincoln deserved the lead - they had 21 touches inside the opposition box compared to Chelsea's 10 and recorded 10 shots to nine - but that domination seemed to poke the bear. Chelsea emerged for the second half several minutes before their lower-league opponents, and wasted little time getting on level terms. George's stinging drive from the edge of the penalty area went in off the post in the 48th minute, and two minutes later the 19-year-old linked up with Buonanotte who jinked through tackles before stabbing past Zach Jeacock. To their credit Lincoln heads didn't drop, and Jorrel Hato had to be alert to sweep away a deflection off Trevoh Chalobah inside the six-yard box. Chelsea could have made the win more comfortable had Jeacock not kept out substitute Estevao with his legs, but in the end a sub-par performance still secured them a place in the fourth round.
Alexander Isak claimed his first goal for Liverpool before Hugo Ekitike scored the winner and was sent off in a narrow victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round. 24 Sep 2025
Sweden striker Isak finished coolly in the 43rd minute after Federico Chiesa latched on to Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy's sloppy pass and cut the ball back to Isak. But the Reds were not at their best and Shea Charles levelled on 76 minutes when Wataru Endo headed back towards his own goal, setting up a nervy finish. Ekitike, who had replaced Isak at half-time and has impressed since his summer move to Merseyside, put the hosts back in front when Chiesa raced on to the ball and set up the Frenchman to slot home. But, already on a booking for a foul early in the second half, Ekitike took off his shirt in celebration and was shown red, leaving Liverpool to see out the final four minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men - and he is now suspended for Saturday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace. Manager Arne Slot had made 11 changes to the side that beat Everton on Saturday and this was a far-from-perfect performance from his young team. But Liverpool, 10-time League Cup winners, have reached the final in three of the past four seasons and it is that squad depth that they will need to lean on to do the same again. Debutant defender Giovanni Leoni, signed from Palma for £26m in the summer, was taken off on a stretcher in the closing stages with a knee injury. Slot said: "If a player goes off like that it's not a good sign. We have to wait and see what it is but usually it's not positive."
Defending champions Paris St-Germain lost their hastily re-arranged Ligue 1 game away to Marseille which ended with home manager Roberto de Zerbi being sent off in stoppage time. 23 Sep 2025
Former West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd's fifth-minute header proved to be the winner in a fixture which had been postponed by a day because of forecasts of heavy rain and storms. It was PSG's first Ligue 1 defeat of the season. "We are not used to losing games," said PSG boss Luis Enrique, who was named coach of the year at the Ballon d'Or awards, held at the same time as the match. The French champions were also without injured forward Ousmane Dembele, who stayed in Paris to attend the Ballon d'Or awards where he won the main men's prize. Marseille started brightly, striking early as Aguerd headed in at the far post after PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier completely misjudged Mason Greenwood's cross. While the visitors looked to respond Marseille nearly doubled their advantage, with Amine Gouiri hitting the crossbar. Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli made several key stops including a sharp save from Achraf Hakimi, while PSG striker Goncalo Ramos headed over a golden chance to level after half-time. Tensions flared late in the game and Marseille's former Brighton boss De Zerbi was sent off in stoppage time. Marseille are sixth in the table with nine points from five games, while PSG are second on 12 points.
Paris St-Germain's Ousmane Dembele won his first Ballon d'Or as the French treble winners came away with several of the key men's awards at the Paris ceremony. 23 Sep 2025
The 28-year-old France forward scored 35 goals and made 14 assists in 53 matches for PSG last season as they won the Champions League, league title and the French Cup. He was the joint top scorer in Ligue 1, with 21 goals, and named the French top flight and Champions League player of the year. And he also helped PSG to the Club World Cup final where they lost to Chelsea in New Jersey. Dembele, who beat Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal to the award, was able to attend the ceremony in Paris - and was in tears as he stood on the stage - despite the fact his team were playing on Monday evening. The forward is currently sidelined through injury, meaning he missed PSG's 1-0 defeat away to Marseille in a game which was rearranged because of a storm. "What I have just experienced is exceptional, I have no words for it, what happened with PSG," said an emotional Dembele, whose mother joined him on the stage. "I feel a bit of stress, it's not easy to win this trophy, and to have it presented to me by Ronaldinho, a legend of football, is exceptional. "I want to thank PSG who came to get me in 2023. It's an incredible family. The president Nasser [Al-Khelaifi] is like a father to me. I also want to thank all the staff and the coach, who have been exceptional with me - he too is like a father - and all my team-mates. "We have practically won everything together. You supported me in the good and the difficult times. This individual trophy is one the team has won collectively."
Inter Milan won for the first time since their opening match of the Serie A season with a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo at San Siro. 22 Sep 2025
Inter took an early lead through Federci Dimarco after Petar Sucic's unselfish assist set up the Italy left-back And the home side looked to have secured three points when Carlos Augusto's shot trickled in off the unlucky Tarik Muharemovic for an own goal with nine minutes of the match remaining. But Sassuolo halved the lead quickly when Walid Cheddira, on loan from Espanyol, scored his first goal for the club after a smart exchange of passes with Domenico Berardi Inter had the ball in the net again within a minute, but Davide Frattesi was flagged for offside and they held on to win for the first time since they beat Torino 5-0 on 25 August.
