Nigeria swept into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in Fes. 06 Jan 2026
The Super Eagles were on top from the off, and talisman Victor Osimhen had an effort ruled out for offside within the first two minutes. Their pressure eventually told in the 20th minute as Ademola Lookman curled home from Akor Adams' cutback to break the deadlock. Five minutes later Osimhen doubled the advantage, turning in after Alex Iwobi's incisive play through midfield released Lookman and his ball across took a deflection off Adams. Mozambique, making their first appearance in the knockout stage, struggled to contain Nigeria's relentless attack and offered little threat going forward. Osimhen made it 3-0 early in the second half, tapping in from Lookman's clever ball across from the left at the back post to score his second of the night. Adams then capped a fine individual display, firing in Nigeria's fourth in the 75th minute after more good work by Lookman. Nigeria, who could have added more, now await Algeria or DR Congo in Saturday's quarter-final tie in Marrakech (16:00 GMT).
Gonzalo Garcia scored a brilliant hat-trick - his first La Liga goals - to help Real Madrid thrash Real Betis at the Bernabeu stadium. 05 Jan 2026
The 21-year-old forward, playing in the absence of the injured Kylian Mbappe, opened the scoring with a header after 20 minutes, and doubled the lead with a superb volley early in the second half. Raul Asencio headed in from a corner to make it 3-0, but Betis pulled a goal back when Cucho Hernandez rounded Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois. But after Betis had hit the woodwork and caused worries for the hosts, Garcia capped his successful afternoon with a sublime backheel from close range. Fran Garcia added Madrid's fifth in stoppage time for a win that reduced the gap between second-placed Madrid and leaders Barcelona to four points while Betis stay in sixth place. Madrid will not play in next weekend's round of La Liga matches because of their Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Thursday, 8 January.
Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Chelsea ended a tumultuous week by claiming a deserved Premier League point at title-chasing Manchester City. 05 Jan 2026
Calum McFarlane, usually Chelsea's under-21s coach, has taken charge of the first team on an interim basis following the departure of Enzo Maresca on Thursday. His side frustrated City for large periods, even after going behind, before Argentine Fernandez poked in at the third attempt to rescue a draw. The win looked to be heading to City following Tijjani Reijnders' first-half strike, but consecutive draws mean they have now fallen six points behind league leaders Arsenal. Chelsea set up with a low block and it took until the 37th minute for the first shot on target when Erling Haaland's deflected shot looked to be looping over Filip Jorgensen, but the Chelsea goalkeeper recovered superbly to tip the ball wide. A minute later the Norwegian striker cut inside and thumped an effort which rattled the post as City sensed a goal was coming their way. It duly arrived just before half-time, as Reijnders picked up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and skipped past Benoit Badiashile before hammering a finish inside the near left post. Chelsea started brightly in the second half and Pedro Neto should have equalised but scooped over from eight yards out, while substitute Liam Delap, formerly of City, smacked an effort into the chest of Gianluigi Donnarumma, before Fernandez's late leveller thrilled the travelling fans.
Harrison Reed scored a stunning 97th-minute equaliser to cancel out Cody Gakpo's 94th-minute goal in a thrilling conclusion as Fulham and Liverpool drew at Craven Cottage. 05 Jan 2026
Florian Wirtz's equaliser initially hauled Liverpool level after Harry Wilson's opener, before Gakpo converted Jeremie Frimpong's cross in stoppage time to seemingly clinch the three Premier League points for Liverpool. But Reed had other ideas as he picked up the ball from 30 yards out and found the top corner with a superb strike. The draw means Liverpool extend their unbeaten run to nine games, while Fulham are unbeaten in their past five. Wilson scored against his former club to give Fulham the lead in a first half where Liverpool struggled to break down Marco Silva's side, despite dominating possession. Arne Slot's team upped the ante after the break and were rewarded when Wirtz finished past goalkeeper Bernd Leno just before the hour mark, but the goal was initially ruled out for offside. However, after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review, the technology established that the German was onside and the goal was given. Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes because of a medical emergency when a member of Fulham's matchday staff was taken ill and had to be taken to hospital. Liverpool - who were without top scorer Hugo Ekitike with a slight hamstring issue - started well and Gakpo wasted a good chance when he scuffed his left-footed effort wide. In the 18th minute they were punished by Fulham's first attempt on goal. Raul Jimenez did superbly to play in Wilson, who took a touch and drilled a left-footed strike past Alisson into the bottom corner. The offside flag went up to curtail Wilson's celebrations, but a VAR check confirmed Virgil van Dijk played him onside for the Welshman's sixth goal of the season. Liverpool continued to have the bulk of the ball but failed to test Leno in the first half. The visitors started the second half strongly with Alexis Mac Allister's header from a corner striking the woodwork, and in the 57th minute they got their reward as Conor Bradley made a dazzling run before teeing up Wirtz, who finished with a left-footed strike past Leno. The flag went up again, but after another lengthy VAR check Wirtz was adjudged to be onside and a goal was given, much to the fury of the home support. Wilson hit the crossbar in the 77th minute as both sides pushed for a winner, and Liverpool looked to have sealed it when Gakpo bundled home in front of an ecstatic away end - before Reed smashed in his first goal since 2023 to send Craven Cottage wild.
Returning captain Achraf Hakimi set up Brahim Diaz's winner as host nation Morocco reached the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) quarter-finals by seeing off a stubborn Tanzania side in Rabat. 05 Jan 2026
Starting his first match for more than two months following an ankle injury, Paris St-Germain right-back Hakimi fed Diaz to fire past Hussein Masalanga at the goalkeeper's near post midway through the second half, sending the Atlas Lions through to a last-eight meeting with South Africa or Cameroon on Friday (19:00 GMT). The Real Madrid playmaker became the first Morocco player to score in four successive matches at the Afcon finals, having been the top scorer in qualifying with seven goals. Hakimi hammered a free-kick against the crossbar as part of a succession of attacks by his side after the break, with Masalanga also saving impressively from Abde Ezzalzouli's close-range header and Ayoub El Kaabi glancing Hakimi's cross wide. Feisal Salum had Tanzania's best chance shortly before Diaz struck, lifting the rebound over the bar after Atlas Lions goalkeeper Yassine Bounou had been unable to hold Mohamed Hussein's curling shot from distance. Tanzania appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty during second-half stoppage time when Iddy Nado reached the ball in front of Adam Masina, who had a hand on the substitute's arm and put his elbow into the Taifa Stars man's back as he went down inside the box.
