Ten Hag to remain Man Utd manager after review. 12 Jun 2024
Erik ten Hag will remain as manager of Manchester United following a post-season review by the club's board. It is understood they are now talking to Ten Hag about extending his contract, which is about to enter its final season. United instigated their review immediately after the FA Cup final. Ten Hag went into the game against Manchester City at Wembley amid a backdrop of reports claiming he would be sacked no matter the outcome. Instead, United's deserved 2-1 victory allowed the club hierarchy to approach the review in a more positive light.
Real Madrid high-wire act brings Champions League glory again. 02 Jun 2024
Real Madrid’s Champions League existence resembles the competition’s version of a high-wire act, where the Spanish giants stumble and threaten to fall so many times, but rarely do. Boss Carlo Ancelotti claimed a historic fifth Champions League title and Real secured their 15th win in the tournament as the bold challenge of Borussia Dortmund was overcome at Wembley with late goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr. As Ancelotti and his players hoisted the giant trophy amid pyrotechnics and fireworks over the stadium, it was a familiar conclusion to a story that had so many elements of the old plotlines. It is not quite a case of "if you've seen one of these victories you've seen them all", but many of the opponents Real have left broken-hearted in these finals in recent years – Atletico Madrid and Liverpool chief among them – will sympathise with the pain Dortmund felt as they walked forlornly in front of their magnificent fans who illuminated Wembley with their colour and made it echo to their noise. Real stumbled around in a dreadful first half for Ancelotti’s side, spooked by Dortmund’s pace and the sheer intensity of Edin Terzic’s side, living on their nerves and luck to somehow go in at half-time on level terms. Karim Adeyemi will wonder whether he should have shot rather than try to go around Real keeper Thibaut Courtois when clean through, then whether he could have done better with another chance that was saved. Niclas Fullkrug saw his shot bounce back agonisingly from the inside of the post, the striker thwarted by Courtois after the break from a powerful header. And all the time there was a growing sense of inevitability that Real would survive and prevail when they looked deep in trouble, as they did against Manchester City in the quarter-finals and Bayern Munich in the last four.
Ayoub El Kaabi struck four minutes from the end of extra time as Olympiakos beat Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final to become the first Greek side to win a European trophy. 30 May 2024
The Moroccan striker, hero of Olympiakos' run to the final, stooped low to head in Santiago Hezze's cross and spark pandemonium in the AEK Arena in Athens. A lengthy video assistant referee check confirmed El Kaabi's 11th goal of the competition and their place in Greek footballing history. It is a second year of dramatic heartbreak for Fiorentina after the Italian side were beaten by West Ham in last season's final thanks to Jarrod Bowen's late goal. Olympiakos flew out of the blocks as they attempted to reward their ferocious support, who had travelled the short distance from Piraeus to the home of their rivals AEK in northern Athens. It was only the second time a Greek team had reached a European final while Fiorentina were playing in their sixth. Both sides traded blows in a first half that promised goalmouth action but resulted in few clear chances. On-loan Wolves midfielder Daniel Podence forced Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano into a fine save down his left in the opening three minutes. Giacomo Bonaventura should have given Fiorentina the lead but his tentative effort in the box safely dropped into Konstantinos Tzolakis’ arms. The Italians put together the best move of the night in the second half as right-back Dodo surged forward and found Christian Kouame in space inside the box but his poor contact on the ball allowed Tzolakis to claw it clear. Extra time was needed it was El Kaabi - who scored five goals in the semi-finals against Aston Villa - who rose to the occasion again.
Xavi's time as Barcelona boss came to an end with a 2-1 win at Sevilla in the final La Liga game of the season. 27 May 2024
Fermin Lopez scored the winner, running to celebrate with the departing boss, who was told on Friday he was being sacked. Robert Lewandowski's early goal gave the visitors the lead before Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri responded. Barcelona were already guaranteed to finish second in La Liga, behind champions Real Madrid, while Sevilla end the season in 14th. Former Spain midfielder Xavi said in January that he was going to leave the Nou Camp, but was persuaded to stay by club president Joan Laporta in April. However, during a meeting with Laporta and sporting director Deco - exactly one month since it was announced that he would remain at the club - the 44-year-old was told he would not be staying. Former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is set to replace him. Xavi, who won four Champions Leagues as a player with the club, guided Barcelona to their only La Liga title in the past five seasons last year. "I don't think the work has been appreciated enough," said Xavi after Sunday's game. "A double last year [La Liga and Super Cup], and this year we haven't been up to the task because of details. "I leave with some mixed feelings because the work is positive even though we didn't win the titles this season. I think we were on the right track and I still think so." Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen added: "Xavi has always given us a lot "He worked every day so that we could succeed. On a personal level, he's been a friend for many years and it's never easy to let him go."
Southampton beat Leeds in the Championship play-off final to secure an immediate return to the Premier League and the £140m to go with it. 26 May 2024
Saints' 11-year spell in the top flight came to an end after a wretched campaign last time out but, despite finishing one place and three points behind Leeds in fourth, it is they who join Leicester and Ipswich in going up. Adam Armstrong scored the decisive goal with a clinical finish after being put clear by Will Smallbone. Leeds substitute Dan James clattered a bouncing ball against the crossbar late on as they pushed for an equaliser but Russell Martin's men saw out almost 12 minutes of time added on. Defeat for Leeds consigned them to another season in the Championship and meant they have now lost their past three finals at Wembley without scoring and been unsuccessful in all six of their play-off campaigns. Saints' promotion means that all three play-off finals this year were won by the team who had finished lower in the league table, with the team who had finished higher failing to score in all three. Both teams came into the game off the back of comprehensive second-leg wins in the semi-finals, Leeds beating Norwich 4-0 and Southampton easing to a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. There was nothing between the two sides for the first quarter of the game before Armstrong put Saints in front with his 24th goal of a prolific campaign. Chances were few and far between thereafter, an oddly off-colour Crysencio Summerville shooting wide for Leeds and Samuel Edozie wasting a fine chance on the break for Southampton. James twice came close to sending the match to extra time but Alex McCarthy made an excellent full-length save from his low 20-yarder after the bar had earlier denied the Welshman. The win gives Martin, who had been discarded at Norwich as a player in Leeds boss Daniel Farke's spell at Carrow Road, his first promotion in management.
