Mixed night for Mbappe but Kante rolls back the years. 18 Jun 2024
Kylian Mbappe is always the headline act when he pulls on the France shirt, but an old campaigner shared top billing by rolling back the years as Austria were eventually overcome in Dusseldorf. Mbappe's so far chequered relationship with the European Championship continues and was summed up in one eventful night as he carved out France's fortunate winner, missed a simple chance barely anyone in Dusseldorf Arena could believe, before finding himself covered in blood from a nasty nose injury following an aerial collision. He even picked up a yellow card after what looked like a blatant act of gamesmanship from France as the blood-stained Mbappe, clearly unable to play on, went back on, dropping theatrically to the floor before being substituted, precious time wasted. It was a needless caution that France will hope does not prove costly later in the tournament.
Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E 18 Jun 2024
Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania a surprise lead in the 29th minute, finding the top corner with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out. Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours' lead after 53 minutes with a long-range effort that squeezed under Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Romania rounded off the scoring four minutes later when Denis Dragus tapped in Dennis Man's cross from close range. Their only previous win at the Euros came in 2000 where a late Ionel Ganea penalty helped them beat England 3-2 in the group stage. Ukraine's players are appearing in their first major tournament since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022. Last week, their forward Mykhailo Mudryk said his family were facing Russian missiles "day and night" in his home city of Krasnograd.
Slovakia caused an upset in their Euro 2024 opener as they stunned Group E favourites Belgium in a chaotic encounter in Frankfurt. 18 Jun 2024
There was drama in the final minutes as Romelu Lukaku thought he had equalised, only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule it out for handball in the build-up. It was the second goal he had scored that had been ruled out by VAR after earlier poking in a header across goal from Amadou Onana. Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead when he capitalised on a mistake at the back by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku, stunning Belgium, ranked third in the world - Slovakia are 45 places below in 48th. After missing countless chances throughout, several falling to all-time top scorer Lukaku, Belgium eventually left empty-handed. In a topsy-turvy 90 minutes, substitute Johan Bakayoko was denied by a superb goalline clearance from Slovakia's David Hancko. Lukaku's frustrations grew as chances kept passing by - the best coming within three minutes after Doku had gone on a spectacular run down the right. Belgium's inability to grasp control meant they trailed at the break, with Doku's costly mistake helping Slovakia get the upper hand. Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne remained a threat, while Arsenal's Leandro Trossard curled an effort over the bar following a poor clearance from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Lukas Haraslin also came close on occasions for Slovakia, fizzing a superbly executed volley towards goal which needed saving by Koen Casteels, before placing another strike wide in the second half. Belgium, who exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage, must respond when they take on Romania next - a side who recorded a stunning 3-0 win over Ukraine in the other match on Monday afternoon
Bellingham - the England hero who 'writes his own scripts'. 17 Jun 2024
Jude Bellingham's remarkable rise continued as he netted England's winner in their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia - with boss Gareth Southgate declaring him a player who "writes his own scripts". The 20-year-old from Stourbridge near Birmingham, who plays for Real Madrid, is the first European player to make an appearance at three major international tournaments before turning 21. He has scored at two of the tournaments, too, having found the net against Iran at the 2022 World Cup. His 13th-minute header in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday ended up being the only goal of the game.
Christian Eriksen marked his return to the European Championship with a special goal - but Slovenia responded to draw with Denmark in Stuttgart. 17 Jun 2024
The midfielder, now playing for Manchester United, collapsed on the pitch against Finland in Denmark's opening match of Euro 2021 and was later fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). Eriksen's return to the Euros began perfectly as he netted his side's opening goal of this tournament 17 minutes in, firing into the bottom left corner after a smart flick-on from Jonas Wind. He was a standout performer as Denmark controlled possession in the first half and created more chances to extend their lead. However Slovenia, who also faced Denmark in qualifying, were backed by vociferous fans in Stuttgart and levelled when Erik Janza's powerful effort flew past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with 13 minutes left. Slovenia's pressure had been growing in the second half and star man Benjamin Sesko sent a warning sign minutes earlier when he smashed an effort against the post. Matjaz Kek's side, who had struggled to contain Eriksen in the first half, could even have snatched a late victory when Andraz Sporar drilled a shot into the side-netting and also volleyed wide. Chances had already come and gone for Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, as well as for Eriksen, while Adam Cerin headed wide at the other end. This result only intensifies a pulsating Group C - which also includes England and Serbia - but will come as a blow to Denmark, who are hoping to go one better than their semi-final achievement in 2021.
