Federico Valverde scored a stunning early free-kick as Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid to set up a Clasico meeting with Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Rodrygo doubled Real's lead in the 55th minute before Alexander Sorloth pulled a goal back for Atletico, but it was the 13-time Super Cup winners who prevailed to reach Sunday's final (19:00 GMT).
Thursday's semi-final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was only 77 seconds old when Los Blancos captain Valverde sent a 30-yard free-kick fizzing past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak into the top corner.
Rodrygo doubled Real's lead 10 minutes into the second half with a cute finish past Oblak, though his excellent first touch to control a Valverde pass before accelerating away from defender Robin Le Normand was the highlight.
Sorloth rose above Raul Asencio at the back post to head home and halve the deficit with more than half an hour still to play, but that was the only one of Atletico's 22 attempts to be converted.
The Norwegian striker somehow headed wide late in the first half when Conor Gallagher found him with an inch-perfect delivery, before Julian Alvarez - goalless in his last eight La Liga outings - snatched a shot wide deep into second-half injury-time.
Xabi Alonso's side - without the injured Kylian Mbappe - had to sweat for the win.
Rodrygo and Vincius Junior - the latter without a goal in 16 games - had opportunities to score in both halves, but Los Blancos were holding on by the end.
Their reward for doing so is the chance to win the second Clasico of the season, after they defeated Barcelona 2-1 at the Bernabeu in October.
Hansi Flick's side reached the final by thrashing Athletic Club 5-0 in the first semi-final on Wednesday.
The Spanish Super Cup is taking place in Jeddah after Saudi Arabia and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) extended a deal to play the tournament in the country until 2029.
Paris St-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser and a penalty shootout to beat Marseille in Kuwait and win a fourth consecutive French Super Cup.
09 Jan 2026
The Champions League winners looked to be cruising to victory in the game played between the winners of Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France after an early goal from Ousmane Dembele.
But Marseille struck twice late on to lead as Mason Greenwood converted a penalty and Willian Pacho scored an own goal.
Goncalo Ramos snatched an equaliser in the final seconds to send the contest to penalties and PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved crucially from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted for PSG to seal the 4-1 shootout win.
Record 14-time winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after the Parisians had won both the league and the French Cup, won the competition for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior watched from the stands as Harry Wilson's fine finish condemned his team to defeat against west London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage.
08 Jan 2026
Rosenior was not appointed in time to take charge but took a watching brief and may have feared the worst when Marc Cucurella was sent off early on.
Chelsea fell behind to Raul Jimenez's header after 55 minutes, but Liam Delap levelled from four yards when the ball bounced back to him off the left post from a corner, after Antonee Robinson almost headed into his own net.
With nine minutes remaining, Wilson beat Jorrel Hato with a smart touch just inside the penalty area before half-volleying the ball into the left corner beyond Robert Sanchez.
Under the direction of caretaker manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea had been left with a mountain to climb from the 22nd minute when Cucurella pulled down Wilson and was red-carded for what was judged to be a professional foul.
It was Chelsea's eighth dismissal of the season in all competitions, including one for former boss Enzo Maresca who was deemed to be over-celebrating in October after a last-minute winner against Liverpool.
There were signs of anger in the away end, with a 'BlueCo out' banner displayed and chants against the ownership as they watched on alongside their new appointment Rosenior.
Defeat means Chelsea fall to eighth place in the Premier League, while Fulham join them on 31 points from 21 games.
Holders Barcelona thrashed Athletic Club to reach the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.
08 Jan 2026
The 15-time winners scored four goals in 16 minutes to put the game beyond doubt at half-time.
That made Barcelona the first team in history to score four first-half goals in a Spanish Super Cup semi-final.
Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 22nd minute by finishing from close range, before Fermin Lopez hammered a shot into the top corner.
Roony Bardghji's fierce strike squirmed under the hands of Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon and Raphinha fired a shot into the roof of the net to give Barcelona an unassailable lead after 38 minutes.
Brazilian Raphinha claimed his second goal to make it 5-0 four minutes after the restart with Simon helpless.
Barcelona comfortably remained in control to make it nine consecutive victories in all competitions and Hansi Flick's side will face either Atletico Madrid or 13-time winners Real Madrid, who meet on Thursday (19:00 GMT).
The final will take place on Sunday in Jeddah after Saudi Arabia and the Spanish Football Federation extended a deal to play the tournament in the country until 2029.
Erling Haaland returned to scoring form with his 150th Manchester City goal - but his side's Premier League title challenge is falling apart, with Brighton holding them to a third consecutive draw.
08 Jan 2026
Pep Guardiola's men have endured an underwhelming start to the year, with poor results and injuries to key players handing the initiative to Arsenal, who could go eight points clear at the top if they beat Liverpool on Thursday.
Brighton were looking to capitalise on City's makeshift backline and Pascal Gross found room to thump a header at goal which was clawed out by Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the German unable to convert the follow-up.
Georginio Rutter then released Ferdi Kadioglu with a pass from the halfway line, but the Turkey international could only shoot straight at the towering Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma.
The Seagulls were exploiting gaps in the opposition defence - Rutter ran clear himself to bear down on goal but was denied by Abdukodir Khusanov's brilliant, last-ditch challenge.
But Brighton failed the most of their chances and paid for that as City took a 41st-minute lead.
Star man Haaland converted a penalty, and scored the Premier League 35,000th goal since its 1992 inception, after Jeremy Doku was brought down in the box by Diego Gomez – the referee only awarding the spot-kick after reviewing it on the pitchside monitor.
Captain Bernardo Silva clipped the post in the second half as the hosts looked to stretch their lead, but Fabian Hurzeler's men hit back through Kaoru Mitoma's lovely finish from the edge of the area.
Gomez incredibly missed when picked out by Mitoma a couple of yards from goal, and both sides had to settle for a point.
