Liverpool's Champions League ambitions were ended after they lost on penalties to an outstanding Paris St-Germain side after a night of drama at Anfield. 12 Mar 2025
PSG, needing to claw back a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at home, demonstrated how they have matured under coach Luis Enrique as they knocked out a Liverpool side touted as favourites to win the tournament. Ousmane Dembele's early goal provided the platform for the turnaround, with Liverpool unable to break the French visitors down, while PSG were a constant threat. PSG's victory over two legs was thoroughly deserved, with keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging as their hero in the shootout, saving from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones before Desire Doue hammered home the winning spot-kick in front of joyous fans. Liverpool made a lightning fast start in an attempt to extend that first-leg advantage, with Mohamed Salah twice coming close in front of the Kop, which was in expectant mood. With Liverpool making the running, there was always the chance PSG's outstanding strikeforce could punish them on the counter and so it proved after only 12 minutes - with a large helping hand from the home defence. Bradley Barcola's cross was routine, but a communication breakdown between Alisson and Ibrahima Konate proved costly, the defender knocking the ball out of the keeper's reach for Dembele to pounce from almost on the goal-line. PSG had other opportunities but could not cash in, Alisson rushing out to save at the feet of Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia firing off target when well placed. Liverpool mounted sustained pressure after the break but struggled to break down PSG's resilient rearguard, although it took a fine clawing save from Donnarumma to keep out Luis Diaz's header, while substitute Jarell Quansah struck the post and Dominik Szoboszlai had an effort ruled out for offside. PSG were by far the better side in extra time, with Alisson making a magnificent save from Dembele before Liverpool's fate was sealed on penalties.
Inter Milan reached the Champions League quarter-finals with victory over Feyenoord at San Siro Stadium. 12 Mar 2025
Marcus Thuram jinked into the box and fired into the top corner as Inter went 1-0 up on the night and 3-0 ahead on aggregate. Hakan Calhanoglu was penalised for clattering into the back of Jakub Moder and the former Brighton midfielder scored from the spot to give Feyenoord hope. The Turkey international made up for his error after the break, converting a penalty after Thomas Beelen fouled Mehdi Taremi in the box. Thuram fired a shot narrowly over the crossbar as he tried to increase Inter's lead in the absence of captain Lautaro Martinez who was on the bench. Simone Inzaghi's side will face Bayern Munich in April as they continue their quest to reach a second Champions League final in three seasons. The Dutch side posed the occasional threat to Inter but the Serie A leaders were largely comfortable on the night. Yann Sommer dived low to his left to palm Hugo Bueno's long-range effort away and Givairo Read had a shot blocked as Feyenoord had 14 attempts on goal but only made one count.
Declan Rice's powerful strike gave Arsenal a point at Manchester United but did little to help their pursuit of Premier League pacesetters Liverpool. 09 Mar 2025
Arsenal dominated the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford but lacked any cutting edge and were punished in first-half stoppage time when United captain Bruno Fernandes curled a 25-yard free-kick past a badly positioned David Raya in goal. Raya made amends with fine second-half saves from Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee before Arsenal finally found the end product with 16 minutes left. United failed to clear and Rice sent a superb rising drive past Andre Onana at the Stretford End to give Arsenal a point - but it did little to dent Liverpool's seemingly unassailable lead at the top of the table as they stand 15 points clear of the Gunners, having played a game more. It could have been worse for Arsenal as it took a miraculous double stop from Raya to keep out Fernandes in the dying seconds to prevent United taking all three points.
Real Madrid moved level on points with leaders Barcelona after they narrowly beat Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. 09 Mar 2025
Two goals in four minutes gave the hosts a comfortable first-half lead. Kylian Mbappe cut inside and slotted into the bottom corner, before Vinicius Jr produced a near-identical finish, via a slight deflection off visiting defender Andrei Ratiu. Pedro Diaz fired in off the crossbar, for his first Rayo Vallecano goal, in first-half stoppage time to halve the deficit. Jude Bellingham made his return from a two-game La Liga suspension but was withdrawn late on after falling awkwardly. The result means Barcelona remain top, with a game in hand, while Real are second on goal difference. Carlo Ancelotti's side travel to city rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday for the second leg of their last-16 Champions League encounter. Atleti missed the chance to go top of La Liga earlier on Sunday when the third-placed side fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Getafe. They led 1-0 through an Alexander Sorloth penalty, but had Angel Correa sent off in the 88th minute and Mauro Arambarri scored twice in the final two minutes for the hosts.
Chelsea moved back into the Premier League top four as Marc Cucurella's second-half strike secured a scrappy win against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge. 09 Mar 2025
It was the Spain left-back's fifth goal of the season - and second in successive league games after netting against Southampton. Cucurella's crucial goal came on the hour mark, beating visiting keeper Mads Hermansen with a left-footed effort from 25 yards. Chelsea had been frustrated until then, with Hermansen saving Cole Palmer's penalty midway through the first half following a trip on Jadon Sancho by Victor Kristiansen. The miss ended Palmer's 100% record from the spot - having scored his previous 12 - and prolonged the playmaker's goalless run to nine matches in all competitions. Leicester impressed during the first half and came close to opening the scoring in bizarre circumstances when Blues defender Tosin Adarabioyo headed against his own crossbar. But that was as close as the Foxes came, with Enzo Maresca's men improving after the break and claiming the winner to leapfrog Manchester City and take a two-point advantage over the reigning champions. Defeat for Leicester left them second bottom in the table, behind 18th-placed Ipswich on goal difference and six points adrift of Wolves in 17th.
