Eric Dier's cool last-minute penalty earned a Champions League draw for Monaco against Manchester City, despite Erling Haaland continuing his scintillating start to the season by scoring twice. 02 Oct 2025
Haaland scored a first-half double to take his tally to 52 goals in just 50 games in the competition as City stretched their unbeaten run to six games. But the visitors were pegged back in the 90th minute when Dier converted from the spot after being kicked in the head by Nico Gonzalez. Norway's Haaland had not had a touch of the ball in the first 15 minutes but with his first, he latched on to Josko Gvardiol's dinked pass and lobbed a cool finish over the advancing Philipp Kohn. Jordan Teze equalised just three minutes later with a thunderbolt strike from outside the area, which arrowed into the top corner and gave Gianluigi Donnarumma no chance. City, though, were controlling the possession and Phil Foden came close to regaining the lead when he shifted the ball on to his weaker right foot but smashed his shot against the crossbar. Haaland was on the periphery of the game but showcased his ruthlessness by leaping high above Mohammed Salisu and powerfully heading in from Nico O'Reilly's cross on the stroke of half-time. Donnarumma made a sharp save low down to deny Maghnes Akliouche in the second half, but the Italy goalkeeper could not stop Dier's late spot-kick.
Goncalo Ramos said Paris St-Germain "want to win everything again" after his last-minute winner downed Barcelona in the battle of two of the Champions League favourites. 02 Oct 2025
Barcelona led when Ferran Torres slid in to meet Marcus Rashford's fine low ball from the left. England's Rashford has scored or assisted a goal in five of Barcelona's last six games. But trophy holders PSG - who won a treble last season including French league and cup titles - levelled when Nuno Mendes found Senny Mayulu after a good run and the 19-year-old slotted home. The visitors, who were missing players through injuries, had the best chances to win the game, and managed to do so with Ramos' first-time finish from Achraf Hakimi's cross. It was the first time an away team had ever scored a last-minute winner in Europe against Barcelona. "I think we deserved the win," said substitute Ramos. "We played better than them. We played our game. "We want to win everything again. We're not happy with just what we did last season. We want more." The result takes PSG to six points from two games, with Barca on three.
Gabriel Martinelli's early goal helped Arsenal maintain their perfect start to the league phase of the Champions League as they overcame Olympiacos. 02 Oct 2025
Having beaten Athletic Club in their first game of the competition thanks to a goal and an assist from the Brazilian forward, he was again crucial for the Gunners. Striker Viktor Gyokeres powered his way through the Greek side's defence, but when his shot bounced off the post after being saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis, Martinelli was on hand to tap in the rebound. Substitute Bukayo Saka sealed the success in added time with a shot that squeezed through the legs of Tzolakis. Mikel Arteta had made six changes from the side that dramatically beat Newcastle United on Sunday as the Arsenal manager utilised his new squad depth thanks to a £250m summer spend that brought in eight new players. This has played a huge part in a solid start to this season and Arteta will be glad of the opportunity to protect key players such as Declan Rice and Saka in their busy schedule. Olympiacos did threaten after Martinelli's 12th-minute opener as Daniel Podence forced David Raya into an excellent save from a superb volley from inside the area which the keeper pushed over the crossbar. Francisco Chiquinho also had a goal ruled out for offside as the visitors pushed for an equaliser. But Arsenal had chances at the other end too, with Martin Odegaard denied by Tzolakis and brave defending. And having set up that chance for his captain, it was Saka who ensured success just before the end.
Borussia Dortmund maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought home win over Athletic Club in the Champions League. 02 Oct 2025
Niko Kovac's side took a deserved lead in the 28th minute when Daniel Svensson was able to convert at the back post after Karim Adeyemi had shown his pace to get to the byeline and deliver the cross. Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde made a triple substitution at half-time in an attempt to get back into the match, only for the hosts to double their advantage within five minutes of the restart. Former Aston Villa and Chelsea winger Carney Chukwuemeka, who has represented England at under-20 level, made it 2-0 with his first European goal, as his low shot took a slight deflection and beat Unai Simon at his near post. Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of England midfielder Jude, almost added a third for Dortmund only to see his deflected shot loop over the crossbar. But Athletic pulled one back in the 61st minute with their first goal in this season's Champions League. It came after an error in the Dortmund defence as Niklas Sule's clearance bounced off team-mate Waldemar Anton and Athletic substitute Gorka Guruzeta swept home the loose ball. Dortmund made sure of the three points in the 82nd minute as Marcel Sabitzer's 20-yard shot bounced in off Serhou Guirassy for the hosts' third goal. Substitute Julian Brandt added a fourth for Dortmund to give the scoreline a flattering feel with a powerful low strike from just inside the penalty area in injury time. Dortmund, second in the German Bundesliga and two points behind leaders Bayern Munich, have now won six and drawn two of their eight games in all competitions in 2025-26, although one of their draws came in their Champions League opener. On that occasion they let a 4-2 lead slip to concede twice in second-half injury-time and draw 4-4 with Juventus in a thrilling match. Athletic have now begun their Champions League campaign with two defeats.
Liverpool suffered back-to-back defeats for only the second time during Arne Slot's tenure. 01 Oct 2025
Liverpool's players were subjected to fireworks let off outside their Istanbul hotel designed to disturb their sleep - but it is a second successive loss that must act as the real wake-up call. The Premier League champions hardly need to go into panic mode as they sit top of the table, but the warning signs of frailty that have dogged the early weeks of their campaign were on display again as they lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in the Champions League. After a seamless transition following his succession to Jurgen Klopp, the title won so impressively in his first term in charge, head coach Arne Slot has hit the first real bumps in the road. On current evidence, after spending close to £450m in the summer, this may yet turn out to be Slot's transitional campaign, rather than the smooth takeover from Klopp without any major acquisitions that followed his arrival from Feyenoord. Alexander Isak, a substitute in Turkey, is still way short of full match fitness following his drawn-out and acrimonious British record £125m move from Newcastle United. And Florian Wirtz, a little cheaper at £116m from Bayer Leverkusen, currently looks somewhat lost and lightweight while he adjusts to the pace of life at Liverpool. But this was not a good night for Slot either. The Dutchman's golden touch with his decision-making deserted him here in Istanbul, the choice to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench backfiring. When the Egyptian was introduced just after the hour, Galatasaray held the lead and the initiative with Liverpool struggling to create chances. The last time Salah was placed on the bench for a Champions League game was against Rangers in October 2022. You suspect Slot may not do it again in a hurry.
