Paris St-Germain are one game away from completing the Treble after the Ligue 1 champions beat Reims to win the French Cup. 24 May 2025
Only 10 clubs have won a domestic league, domestic cup and European Cup treble but PSG have the chance to become the 11th when they face Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich next Saturday. Having clinched the league title at the end of April they made it a domestic double with the win over Reims. Two goals in three minutes from Bradley Barcola put PSG in command, getting his first in the 16th minute when he drove into the bottom corner before tapping in for his second. Achraf Hakimi then turned in a cross at the back post to make it 3-0 just before half-time. Ousmane Dembele had a couple of opportunities to do further damage in the second half but PSG were unable to add to their three goals. PSG will celebrate this latest success before switching focus to the Champions League final as Luis Enrique looks to become just the second manager to win the Treble twice, having previously managed it with Barcelona in 2015. Pep Guardiola is currently the only manager who has won two Trebles, with Barcelona in 2009 and Manchester City in 2023.
Teenager Tom Watson scored a 95th-minute winner to send Sunderland up to the Premier League and deny Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium. 24 May 2025
The 19-year-old, who is joining Brighton and Hove Albion next season, curled a low effort past Michael Cooper to secure the Black Cats' return to the top flight for the first time in eight years. It was an incredible end to a match in which they had been second best for large parts. Tyrese Campbell had given the Blades a deserved first-half lead and Harrison Burrows would have had a second but for a video assistant referee (VAR) call for offside. Somehow the Wearside club hung in there and equalised through Eliezer Mayenda's fine goal on 76 minutes. Then with United down to 10 men temporarily having used all five substitutes after defender Anel Ahmedhodzic went off with a head injury, Watson took advantage of the extra space in the most dramatic way possible.
Aberdeen earned a sensational first Scottish Cup victory in 35 years as Dimitar Mitov's penalty shootout saves from Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston ensured they came from behind at Hampden to deny Celtic a treble. 24 May 2025
Alfie Dorrington's own goal just before half-time had Brendan Rodgers' holders and favourites ahead and apparently in control. But a resolute Aberdeen hung in and were rewarded after 83 minutes when substitute Shayden Morris' teasing cross was inexplicably diverted into his own net by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. That moment opened the door for a scarcely unimaginable outcome and Aberdeen would seize upon their big moment at the end of a rollercoaster season. After Celtic captain McGregor had his opening penalty saved by Mitov, Aberdeen scored four fine spot-kicks before their goalkeeper plunged low to push away Johnston's effort and ensure his place in Pittodrie legend. It also confirms Aberdeen will have European League football throughout the autumn and gives manager Jimmy Thelin silverware in his first season in charge.
Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay scored a spectacular scissor-kick volley to help Napoli beat Cagliari and take the club to their fourth Serie A title. 23 May 2025
With second-placed Inter Milan leading 2-0 at Como, Napoli had to win to finish top of Serie A, with their supporters creating a sensational atmosphere at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. After the hosts dominated the opening stages, McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in a £25.7m move in August, made the breakthrough when he acrobatically connected with Matteo Politano's right-wing cross. Napoli knew a victory would see them become Italian champions for the second time in three seasons and Romelu Lukaku sealed it as he showed great strength and pace to hold off a challenge from Michel Adopo and slot the ball past Alen Sherri for the hosts' second. That goal sparked great scenes of celebration with the Napoli substitutes and coaching staff running on to the pitch, while Lukaku received a yellow card for taking his shirt off. The rest of the match was played in a party mood as Napoli celebrated becoming Italian champions again having done so in 1986-87, 1989-90 and 2022-23, before the trophy presentation. "It happened again, and it's something wonderful," said Conte. "When we got to the stadium, it was honestly difficult to get in, as I don't know how many people were there. I had a slight thought, if we let these people down, it'd be something we carried with us for a long time. "It was certainly the most unexpected, difficult and stimulating challenge of my career. To come to Napoli after 10th place [in 2023-24] and try to get everything back on track, and convince some of the best players to remain because we could do something positive." McTominay scored 12 goals and contributed four assists throughout the campaign, with him named Serie A Player of the Season shortly after the conclusion of the game.
Here in Bilbao, Ange Postecoglou backed it all up. Tottenham are Europa League champions. Their 17-year trophy drought is over. Their Champions League status reinstated. 22 May 2025
But, for Postecoglou, the euphoria of his team's historic win against Manchester United means far more. It means he can puff out his chest and say: "I told you so." "I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed. I don't say things unless I believe them," said Postecoglou in September. For nine months his critics have been waiting for his now infamous quote to bite him on the backside. Well, it hasn't. Postecoglou, against the odds, has delivered on his promise. He has provided the trophy, in his second season at the club, that Tottenham's supporters so desperately crave. "I'm a winner. Win is what I do the most," said Postecoglou after his side's victory over Manchester United. "Even when I signed, Daniel [Levy] said 'we've gone after winners and it didn't work, now we've got Ange'. Mate, I'm a winner." It begs the question: what next for the Australian? There remains major doubt over Postecoglou's future despite this epic night. In the immediate aftermath of arguably the most significant trophy of his career, Postecoglou hinted that he wanted to stay on as head coach - intimating that he wanted to build on this Europa League success. His future will be confirmed in the coming days, but amid the jubilation remains clear indications that he will leave Tottenham ahead of next season. It remains to be seen whether what unfolded in Spain alters the direction of travel. But if he does exit, he'll go out via the front door – not ushered out the back. He'll go out a winner. And all this amid a backdrop of under achievement, transfer disappointments, internal tensions, injuries and supporter disquiet.
