Real Madrid beat Espanyol to ensure Barcelona must wait for the La Liga title - which they could seal in El Clasico next Sunday. 04 May 2026
Barca need only a draw at the Nou Camp against their old rivals to be crowned champions. Vinicius Jr scored two second-half goals against Espanyol at RCDE Stadium, netting the opener following a one-two with Goncalo Garcia, and another from Jude Bellingham's backheeled returned pass. Vinicius had earlier hit a post with a deflected strike. Omar El Hilali was shown a red card for fouling Vinicius, but it was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR). In the 97 years of La Liga the title has never been won in El Clasico. Real's victory over Espanyol means they avoid the dilemma of whether they would give Barca a guard of honour as champions before the game. Barca are 11 points above Real and could break the record for the biggest title-winning margin in history, which stands at 15 points from their 2012-13 triumph. If they win their final four games they will finish with a record-equalling 100 points - achieved by Real in 2011-12 and Barca in 2012-13. It would also give them the record for La Liga wins - 33. They have drawn only once. Real are facing only their second season without a trophy since 2009-10, having also failed to win anything in 2020-21.
Inter Milan clinched their 21st Serie A title with a convincing 2-0 win over Parma. 04 May 2026
Needing only a point to claim the Scudetto with three games to spare, Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck the decisive goals in the success at San Siro. Inter, who last won the title in 2024, moved 12 points clear of defending champions Napoli. France forward Thuram opened the scoring in first-half added time, powering a right-footed finish into the corner past Parma keeper Zion Suzuki. Inter had to wait until the 80th minute for their second, with Lautaro Martinez sending the ball across the face of goal for his fellow substitute, 37-year-old Mkhitaryan, to slot home. Blue and gold ribbons littered the pitch at the end as Inter boss Cristian Chivu celebrated his first major prize as a coach, having won Serie A three times as a player with the club. He had told the media before the game that Inter wanted to "kill off" the Scudetto, external "as soon as possible". And they dominated against 12th-placed Parma, with five of their 12 shots on target, compared to the visiting side's none from four, 59% possession and three big chances. Inter have scored 19 goals in their past six matches and were favourites to be crowned champions, having won 26 of their 35 matches.
Kobbie Mainoo celebrated his new contract by scoring the winner that swept Manchester United back into the Champions League as they clinched a five-goal thriller against Liverpool at Old Trafford. 03 May 2026
United led 2-0 at the break, thanks to early goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. However, Liverpool turned the contest on its head immediately after half-time as Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo capitalised on errors to level. But in a frenzied finish, Liverpool failed to clear Luke Shaw's cross and the ball fell kindly for Mainoo on the edge of the area and he crashed a first-time effort into the bottom corner. It came three days after Mainoo signed a new five-year contract at United - in a season when he did not start a league game under former boss Ruben Amorim. In a game missed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who was taken from the ground in an ambulance as a precaution after feeling unwell, the victory confirmed United's return to Europe's elite club competition after a two-year absence and means Liverpool still need four points to confirm their spot. Almost as important in meetings between England's two most successful clubs, this win gave United bragging rights thanks to their first league double over Liverpool since 2015-16. That can only strengthen Michael Carrick's claim to be appointed head coach on a permanent basis. Carrick has now beaten Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea to complete a clean sweep of England's 'Super League' clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur moved out of the Premier League relegation zone with an outstanding victory at Aston Villa as new head coach Roberto de Zerbi's rescue mission gathered momentum. 03 May 2026
West Ham United's defeat at Brentford on Saturday left the door ajar for Spurs to go above their rivals - and they stormed through it with arguably their finest performance of the season. They made light of injuries to key forwards Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke in last weekend's victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers - their first in the league since 28 December - to establish a fully deserved two-goal lead at the interval against their fifth-placed hosts. Conor Gallagher's first goal since his January move from Atletico Madrid, a crisp low finish from 20 yards, was just reward for a fine start as the visitors led after 12 minutes. Joao Palhinha then hit the post with a swerving effort, but Spurs' second goal was not long in coming as Richarlison headed emphatically past Villa keeper Emi Martinez from Mathys Tel's cross in the 25th minute. Villa manager Unai Emery made seven changes from the team that lost to Nottingham Forest in the Europa League semi-final first leg, with one eye clearly on Thursday's return at Villa Park - and it showed in a dismal display. Substitute Emi Buendia pulled a goal back with seconds left, heading home Matty Cash's cross, but it was too little, too late as Spurs secured the crucial win that moved them a point ahead of West Ham with just three league games left.
Barcelona will face Lyon in the Women's Champions League final for the fourth time in seven years after a 4-2 semi-final second-leg win over Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp. 03 May 2026
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, strikes from Salma Paralluelo and captain Alexia Putellas either side of Linda Dallman's equaliser put Barca on course for a sixth straight Champions League final. Goals after the break from Ewa Pajor and Putellas, before a consolation strike from Pernille Harder, confirmed a 5-3 aggregate victory in front of a capacity crowd of more than 60,000. In a frantic first half which featured three goals in nine minutes, Paralluelo latched on to Caroline Graham Hansen's cross at the back post to put Barca ahead. Bayern equalised when Harder drove forward on the counter-attack before laying off for Dallmanto to score with a first-time finish. Barca restored their advantage through Putellas, who finished from inside the penalty area after Vanessa Gilles failed to clear. Pajor converted Paralluelo's cross from the left and Putellas acrobatically volleyed in after Esmee Brugts' header from a set-piece. Harder capitalised on poor defending to pull a goal back for Bayern, before substitute Arianna Caruso had an effort tipped on to the crossbar by Barca keeper Catalina Coll, and Dallman hit the bar moments later. Harder netted for a second time in stoppage time, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul in the build-up. Barca midfielder Aitana Bonmati, the winner of the past three Ballons d'Or, came on as a second-half substitute, her first appearance since breaking a leg in November. "I'm so happy to be back. We make it to another final," she told ESPN. "Our team is doing an amazing season. Another Champions League final. Incredible team. "In my career I've had very special moments but today is one of the most special moments. Back from a long injury in front of 60,000 people and beating Bayern is special."
