Marcus Edwards scored a second-half equaliser as Liverpool were held to a frustrating Premier League draw by struggling Burnley at Anfield. 18 Jan 2026
Florian Wirtz gave Arne Slot's side the lead in the first half with an emphatic strike, 10 minutes after Dominik Szoboszlai had hit the bar from the penalty spot. Liverpool dominated possession throughout but failed to take their chances, with the hosts having 32 shots and Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka making eight saves. And Edwards punished the home side with a superb finish past Alisson in the 65th minute after he was played through by Florentino Luis. Liverpool pushed hard for a late winner but could not find a second goal and this will go down as two points dropped against a side who are 19th in the table. Saturday's result extended the Reds' unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions, although this was a fourth straight league draw. A point takes Liverpool one clear of Manchester United in fourth, but Slot's side missed the chance to cut the gap to second-placed Manchester City and Aston Villa in third to five points. Burnley remain winless in their past 13 league games but this draw would have felt like a win. The Clarets are still deep in the relegation zone but a point at Anfield could do wonders for their confidence.
Ousmane Dembele scored twice as Paris St-Germain moved back to the top of Ligue 1 with a confident victory over Lille. 17 Jan 2026
The French forward opened the scoring early on with a fine strike, curling a low effort into the corner of the net from 20 yards. Dembele notched a spectacular second at the Parc des Princes just after the hour mark with an audacious chip from just inside the box. Bradley Barcola added a third in injury time after capitalising on a mix-up in the Lille defence. Dembele won the Ballon d'Or last season but has suffered an injury-hit campaign. PSG coach Luis Enrique said despite the 28-year-old's impressive attacking display he still needs to contribute in other areas of his game. "Everyone will say that Ousmane is the best player but for me, no, we still need to see the best version of Ousmane defensively," Enrique said. "Because we need a player like him with a defensive mentality. He showed that last year and this year, he needs to continue that." PSG are two points above Lens, who will return to the Ligue 1 summit should they beat Auxerre on Saturday.
Morocco will look to end a 50-year wait for their second continental title when they face Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. 17 Jan 2026
But the Atlas Lions will also be looking to garner the ultimate return for their country's huge investment in footballing infrastructure. The game in Rabat (19:00 GMT) pits the continent's top two teams against one another, with the North Africans ranked 11th in the world and the Teranga Lions eight places below them. "We are waiting for this trophy for 50 years now," Morocco defender Romain Saiss told the BBC World Service. "It's been a long time for everyone in the country. It's the dream of all Moroccans." Morocco boast the best defence at the finals, with five clean sheets and the only goal conceded by Yassine Bounou coming from the penalty spot, but will face a stern examination from a Senegal side which has scored 12 times en route to booking their place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The West Africans are also bidding for their second Afcon crown, having claimed their maiden trophy at the 2021 edition in Cameroon. As well as the glory and the chance to call themselves the best team on the continent, the champions will pick up $10m in prize money - an increase of $3m from the last tournament. Meanwhile, for the fourth edition in a row the winners will be coached by an African, with Morocco's Walid Regragui or Senegal's Pape Thiaw emulating Djamel Belmadi (Algeria, 2019), Aliou Cisse (Senegal, 2021) and Emerse Fae (Ivory Coast, 2023).
Sadio Mane scored the winner as Senegal beat Egypt to reach the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) - and leave Mohamed Salah still waiting for his first continental title. 15 Jan 2026
Mane struck the only goal of a cagey contest with 12 minutes remaining in Tangier, firing a low right-footed shot inside the left-hand upright after the ball broke to him outside the box. It marks the third occasion that the Senegal forward has got the better of his former Liverpool team-mate in a high-stakes international match. Both of those previous wins came four years ago, as the West Africans beat the Pharaohs on penalties in both the final of the 2021 Afcon and a play-off for the 2022 Fifa World Cup. Salah had scored four goals in Egypt's run to the semi-finals, his best haul at an Afcon, but was largely anonymous as the North Africans failed to test Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy until Omar Marmoush had a long-range effort saved in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Pape Thiaw's side will face Morocco in the final on Sunday (19:00 GMT) after the host nation beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in Wednesday's second semi-final. Senegal will be without captain Kalidou Koulibaly and midfielder Habib Diarra for the final after both players picked up a second caution in the knockout stage - although Koulibaly may not be fit anyway after being forced off midway through the first half.
Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by second division Albacete in Alvaro Arbeloa's first game in charge. 15 Jan 2026
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender rested Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham before Saturday's La Liga game against Levante. However, Arbeloa defended his decision to rest the quartet and select academy players Jorge Cestero and David Jimenez, as he insisted he "brought a team capable of winning". "If anyone is responsible and to blame for this outcome, it's clearly me - the one who made the decisions regarding the line-up, how we wanted to play, the substitutions," said Arbeloa. "I'm not afraid of failure. I understand anyone who wants to describe this defeat as a failure. Failure is part of the road to success. "It will make me better, and it will make us all better. I've endured defeats harder than this one. We'll prepare for the next match with maximum dedication." Albacete took the lead in the 42nd minute when defender Javi Villar headed Jose Lazo's corner past Andriy Lunin. Madrid responded promptly in first-half stoppage time through Franco Mastantuono. But substitute Jefte Betancor scored twice - either side of Gonzalo Garcia's equaliser - in the final eight minutes of the game to seal the Segunda side's place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a first victory over the 15-time Champions League winners.
